How Hanneke Antonelli Manages Many Careers (Coach, Author, Model)

by | May 30, 2021

Meet Hanneke Antonelli. I’ve known Hanneke for years and have admired how she has moved gracefully between professions. She’s now her own boss and on a mission to help people overcome their mental and physical barriers. In her new book The Up Level Project, she discusses her journey of transformation and how she has navigated multiple careers. You’ll find her comments below both insightful and instructional.

Hanneke’s Careers

  • Foreign exchange money broker on Wall Street
  • Pilates instructor & business owner
  • Life Coach specializing in helping people grow their businesses
  • Modeling as a side-gig (and gardening hobbyist)

On her motivations for having many careers

My passions and interests are multidimensional and multi-faceted. I have a lot of ambition and a drive to use all the opportunities and talents I’ve been given to reach my full potential as a human and a member of society.

On how long she’s had these careers

Eight years in coaching. 10 years as a Pilates instructor with a three-year overlap between the two. I’ve been modeling for 19 years.

Advice to those who aspire to have multiple careers

Get really good at managing your time and guarding your energy. Learn to say no out of obligation. Always outsource the stuff you’re not good at, don’t have an interest in getting good at, or have no aptitude for.

On overcoming obstacles

Personal setback: overcoming depression after landing in a psychiatric ward in my 20s. I was able to rise from that dark place by committing myself that I would do whatever I could to get better. I explain more about my journey and the steps I took in my book, The Up Level Project.

On how her many careers are mutually beneficial

In the last eight years, I’ve combined my Wall Street business experience and entrepreneurial spirit I gained while building my award-winning Pilates brand with my passion for personal development. Now I help entrepreneurs to grow sustainable businesses that allow them freedom and higher profits. This conscious choice has allowed me to hone my expertise and stay focused while still having my finger in many different pies (i.e., other businesses in various industries.) Producing workout videos and modeling on the side has helped me hone my stage presence to host workshops, business retreats, and become a captivating speaker.

On finding work-life balance

I plan my to-do’s, so I always know what I have to do when I sit down to work. I have also set aside specific times for client appointments. And finally, I’ve drawn clear boundaries around work/on mode and rest/play. When I’m on, I’m on, when I’m off, I’m off. I understand that rest isn’t a reward (as a colleague reminded me recently.) I use rest and play as part of my productivity strategy.

On something you wished she had learned earlier

You don’t have to do and accomplish it all at today — that will only lead to a frustrated and burnt-out you.
