I’m all for over-the-top music spectacles. And this one takes the cake. 🎂
U2 is performing a 36-show residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, a 17,500-person capacity venue built for art, where the entire building acts as a speaker.
The band received $10 million from the Sphere’s owner, in addition to their $4 million per night fee, to stage the production. The Sphere needed U2 more than U2 needed the Sphere.
The show features immersive graphics and high-resolution screens, showcasing a combination of bespoke video graphics and live footage of the band. The visuals enhance the music and create an extraordinary experience for the audience.
U2’s residency focuses on the album Achtung Baby, which remains emotionally powerful even 30 years later. The setlist also includes hits from other albums, including Rattle and Hum.
The band members embrace the challenge of creating a unique show and genuinely care about their fans’ experience, apologizing for any inconveniences. U2’s relentless earnestness and ability to take risks set them apart in the industry.
BUT the spectacle comes with challenges:
The Sphere reported a loss of $92 million shortly after its September opening. The company’s CFO resigned, leading to an interim replacement. Despite the financial setback, the company remains optimistic about generating long-term value and building positive momentum.
Let’s put aside the financials for now.
Because I want to know….
Who else would you like to see perform at the Sphere?
I’m thinking the Red Hot Chili Peppers, KISS, Cher…
