Is there too much music out there? Yes!
A website calls Forgotify showcases ~4 million songs on Spotify that have never been played. Forgotify randomly selects & plays these unheard songs in an effort to uncover hidden gems and support lesser-known artists. When you listen to the song, it disappears from the website (because it now has 1 stream).
I check this website when I’m in discovery mode. Trying to find a new sound or vibe. Or just some musical inspiration. I used Forgotify yesterday. Here’s what I found:
1. “Chandni Chand Se Hoti Hai” – A Hindi song with reverbed-strings that reminds me of what my parents like to watch
2. “Safari Original Mix” – An upbeat dance song with African elements
3. “Agua Ardiente” – Nueva flamenco guitar
See what I mean?
Listening to Forgotify is like hearing a tree fall in a forest. There is a vast amount of music available online. And there’s a challenge in finding new music.
While Forgotify may not completely solve the problem of overlooked songs, it highlights the untapped potential of unheard music.
Forgotify hopes to enhance the experience of music streaming by introducing users to the long-tail of songs that are rarely played.
