Learn How to Use Your Dishwasher Better. This New York Times story settles the debate (and is bad news for divorce attorneys): Don’t pre-rinse your dishes. Yet 60-80% of people do. In a study of 17 different dishwashers loaded with “the crustiest, most stubborn food stains…” the washers did a “fantastic job.” You’ll save energy & costs. More tips: (1) experiment with detergents/try rinse aid, (2) load it well with dirtiest surfaces down/silverware up, (3) clean a few times per year.
💰 Money
Consider I Bonds. This is a government-backed bond that’s yielding ~10%. The window to buy these bonds ends Oct 28, when they’ll drop to ~6%. There’s a $10k limit per individual per year.
📚 Books
Read The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatikala. 2022 winner of the Booker Prize. A searing satire set amid the mayhem of the Sri Lankan civil war.
🎵 Music
Listen to Janus by Paula Boggs. A gorgeous album. “Janus is a god/goddess of transition, doors opening and closing, chapters beginning and ending. All of its songs were written or reimagined during the 2020 pandemics of public health, racial unrest and political turmoil,” says Boggs. My favorite tracks: “Ebony Revisited” and “King Brewster” featuring Don Flemons.
📽️ Film
Watch Score: a Film Music Documentary directed by Matt Schrader. A look at the cinematic art of the film musical score, and the artists who create them.
