A few years ago, I visited Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol’s basement studio outside Boston.

Charlie Parker on one wall. Turkish masters on another. Handmade instruments everywhere.

You don’t invent a genre by starting from scratch.

You invent one by combining things that have never had a reason to meet before.
