7PS: Fewer ships. More paperwork. 🚒

by | Jun 7, 2026

Read time: 1 minute, 362 words.

In 1914, the British Navy had 62 battleships.

By 1928, it had just 20.

The fleet was shrinking.

The empire was shrinking.

But back at headquarters, something strange happened.

The Admiralty staff grew by almost 80%.

More administrators.

Less work.

That absurd pattern became Parkinson’s Law:

Work expands to fill the time available.

And once you see it, you start seeing it everywhere.

  • A 30-minute task takes all afternoon when you give it all afternoon.
  • A meeting fills the full hour because the calendar says it can.
  • A project due in six weeks somehow becomes a six-week project.

If you don’t set the container, the work will expand to create one.

Set a tighter deadline.

Cut the meeting in half.

Instead of taking 6 months to make my next album, I gave myself 2 months…

And I finished it in ~2 months.

Homogenic by BjΓΆrk. Built around stark contrasts between electronic beats and string arrangements, the album fused Icelandic sensibility with global club culture. It marked a shift toward treating albums as cohesive emotional worlds rather than collections of songs.
