Welcome to the Holiday music season

Have you started listening to holiday music yet? 🎄

Today is when most press play on this genre.

I listen to this festive music every April because I record/produce/distribute

lots of it. Welcome to the season for seasonal music. The music community has been waiting for you.

Billboard estimated way back in 2018 that holiday music made $177 million in revenue/royalties for record labels. This was before streaming became as ubiquitous as it is now.

Licensing deals for television, film, and commercials can be another cash cow for record companies. From Hallmark movies to Coca-Cola advertisements, holiday music sets the mood and evokes warm emotions during the festive season.

Most listen to holiday music from December 1 to 26, with some starting as early as November 1 and few continuing until December 31.

As you can see from the graph, Christmas music enthusiasts have been jingling all the way for weeks, not just starting today. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, with cheer, retail madness, chestnuts on fire, and our favorite festive stars emerging from hibernation (I’m looking at you, Michael BublĂ©). 53% of Americans consider Christmas music an “essential” part of any celebration, capturing the magic of the holidays with holly-jolly hits.

According to Spotify, December 12th marks the turning point when Christmas songs take over 2% of all music streams. Festive tunes gradually increase each weekend, reaching their peak on Christmas day, and abruptly declining once the holiday is over.

Unsurprisingly, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is skyrocketing up the Spotify charts. It claimed the 11th spot globally, racking up a whopping 3.3 million streams in a day, pouring $8-10k of royalties into the pockets of the rights holders.

Who needs partridges in pear trees when you have Mariah?

Retail workers have their own preferences, favoring upbeat tunes like (no surprise) “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Some suggest playing holiday music in stores as early as August.

So deck the halls, grab your eggnog, and get ready to rock around the Christmas tree. The holiday season is upon us, and there’s no escaping the infectious tunes that fill the airwaves.
