Love the idea of public service but don’t want to become a politician?
20 years ago, I attended the Democratic National Convention. I was working on the John Kerry presidential campaign at the time.
I served as special assistant and speechwriter to Senator Max Cleland of Georgia, who was a top surrogate on the campaign.
At the DNC in Boston, I witnessed a then-state senator talk about unifying red states and blue states.
I had actually met Obama in Carbondale, Illinois a few weeks earlier. I traveled there with Max, and the 4 of us (including the driver) went to a function together.
I sat in the back seat with Obama. Max always sat in the front seat, as it was easier for him to get in and out of the car. Max was a triple-amputee who sustained his injuries in the Vietnam War.
Obama’s speech at the 2004 convention was electric.
It put him on the political map and arguably propelled him towards the presidency just 4 years later.
His speech inspired me. And so did the whole 2004 campaign.
But I didn’t want to run for office.
In fact, a mentor told me:
“Kabir, don’t go into politics. Go work at a bank. Learn how to make money. Because that is a gift you can share with people the rest of your life.”
So, I became a banker.
But that didn’t satisfy my desire to serve….
During the 2004 campaign, I visited many American Legion and VFW halls with Max. I met thousands of veterans. Military service intrigued me.
I eventually joined the US Navy reserve.
