7 things to do in Muscat

There are many fascinating things to see in Oman’s port capital, which is located in the Gulf of Oman.

1. Where to stay

  • Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah – a palatial resort with inviting pool, rooms, suites.
  • Al Bustan Palace (Ritz Carlton) – delicious breakfast (10+ fresh juices), large rooms. Telling facts: Every workout station in the gym has a towel/bottle of water. The foot-cleaning shower (to get sand off your feet) isn’t a dinky faucet but a 10 second uninterrupted stream of water.

2. Where to eat

  • Ramssa – Omani cuisine. The owner relocated from Los Angeles.
  • Slider Station – Yummy sliders
  • Camel Cookies – Get the saffron and date
  • Automatic – Lebanese cuisine
  • Filful – Beiruti street food
  • Era Cafe – Coffee shop. The coffee with dates comes in a gold-colored teapot.

3. The National Museum

Located in the center of town, opposite Al Alam Palace. Schedule a private tour or go at your own pace.
Several exhibits that showcase Omani attire, pottery, ships, armorer, handaxes, ceramics, doors, (and my favorite) instruments. Check the store for mugs, pencils, stationary.

4. Muttrah Souq

Get lost in this souk. Plenty of places to get souvenirs like frankincense, silverware, dates, and other trinkets.
Some good restaurants outside the souk where you can have shwarma and specialty juices like avocado.

5. Hike

Muscat is a mixture of beaches and mountains. Go for a moderate hike and take in the vistas.
You could also take a day trip to Nizwa and see the fort.

6. Beaches

Check out beautiful beaches like Qurum Beach, Qantab Beach, Pebble Beach. While you’re chilling out, listen to Chase, an Omani artist.

7. Frankincense

Oman is known for its frankincense. You can’t go to Muscat without finding some to smell and perhaps even taste!
