Do music videos still matter?

I mean… can you remember the last one you watched in its entirety?

It’s been a while for me. And I’m in the music biz.

But the videos still matter especially in certain genres like Latin.

Check out this graph on ChartMetric. Here’s a key finding:

“This resulted in an average gap of 731M between the number of views on the videos and the number of streams on Spotify. While this data does not offer a comprehensive view of the entire music industry, it does suggest a shift in the role and impact of music videos compared to previous eras.”

Ok, there are more music streams than video streams.

What should we read into this?

The rise of streaming platforms and changing consumer behaviors have raised questions about the importance of music videos.

Despite some shifts in consumption patterns, music videos still hold value, with many top-streamed tracks on Spotify having accompanying videos.

Specific successful music videos like Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” and Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” demonstrate how videos can enhance artist-audience connections.

Music videos have played a significant role in shaping the music industry and artists’ careers.

The digital age has transformed the way audiences consume music, with streaming platforms dominating the landscape.

While music videos may not be as dominant as before, they continue to be a relevant marketing tool.

Many artists use music videos to enhance storytelling and visual representation of their music. Videos can provide artists with a platform to express creativity and connect with fans on a deeper level.

The success of music videos is often measured by their impact on viewers and social media engagement.

Collaborations with talented directors and visual artists can elevate the quality and impact of music videos.

Music videos are still an essential part of an artist’s overall branding and promotional strategy.
