Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) argues that unauthorized training of AI on copyrighted music is fair use, despite arguments from Universal Music Group and National Music Publishers Association that it is infringement.

a16z suggests that requiring licensing for AI training could unfairly advantage large corporations over more agile startups.

The VC firm also contends that harming AI’s development could pose a national security risk for the US, allowing other countries to outpace the US in areas important to security.

It’s not a surprise that a16z takes a techno-optimistic view of AI, claiming that it has the potential to make everyone smarter and more capable. Limiting AI’s development would stifle economic growth, creation of new industries, new jobs, and wage growth.

This is going to continue to playout out in the courts and among policy makers.
