20 summers ago, I attended a political convention.

I was working on a presidential campaign as a speechwriter & assistant.

I heard a then-state senator talk about uniting red & blue states.

We had actually met a few weeks earlier in Illinois — and drove together in the backseat of a towncar to a function.

He was elected President in 2008.

I was inspired to serve, but I didn’t want to run for office.
