7PS: Capture the moment πŸŽ₯

by | Feb 22, 2026

Read time: 1 minute, 370 words.

In 2017, I traveled to Selma with Congressman John Lewis.

Over breakfast at the hotel, I asked if I could record him reading a speech.

I had a vague idea then.

Maybe an album about Selma.

Nothing concrete.

We found an empty ballroom.

I stacked chairs around him to dampen the sound and block the noise from the kitchen.

He read.

The recording sat on my voice recorder for years.

In 2020, I helped him write his final memoir.

Yesterday was the late congressman’s birthday.

I released a lo-fi remix of “We Shall Overcome” featuring that speech I recorded back in Selma.

I didn’t know then what it would become.

Record your ideas. The time will come.

🎡 Music

Voodoo by D’Angelo. Recorded over several years in the late 1990s, with long, exploratory sessions centered primarily at Electric Lady Studios in New York, the album became a laboratory for D’Angelo and the Soulquarians. Its defining feature is its intentional “behind-the-beat” feel: drums and instruments are placed slightly late, creating a loose, elastic groove influenced by hip-hop and J Dilla–style rhythmic concepts.
