How Natalie Jean Thrives with Many Careers (Artist, Minister, EA)

by | Dec 7, 2020

Meet Natalie Jean. She is an accomplished multi-careerist who deftly balances careers in the arts, real estate, and even the clergy. That she is able to seamlessly move among her different fields, reveals her intellectual curiosity and capacity to simply get things done. I’ve long admired her artistry. Knowing her full story has made me appreciate how she manages to thrive in each of her chosen professions. I’m sure you’ll find her commentary below illuminating.

Natalie’s careers

  • Singer, songwriter, performer
  • Executive Assistant for a real estate developer
  • Interfaith Minister

On her motivations for having many careers

“My musical and spiritual work is what is most important to me. My day job allows me to pursue the other two. I love how music and spirituality can help others. They have a power to heal. They both can be an outlet for good.”

On how long she’s had these careers

“I have been in the music business for 9 years. Fourteen years as an Executive Assistant/Compliance Specialist, and 16 years as an interfaith minister.”

Advice for aspiring multi careerists

“My career choices require a lot of my time. So, my advice would be to decide exactly what you want out of your careers, learn how to multi-task, prioritize your goals, and have a positive attitude.”

On overcoming obstacles

“Learning who to trust. Not everyone is your friend or wants you to succeed. There are those that will come into your life to use you. In the music industry, there are a lot of scammers. I was scammed out of $5,000 in my earlier days. I had to learn to do my due diligence.”

How multiple careers are mutually beneficial

“My job as an Executive Assistant/Compliance Specialist has taught me how to work with different types of personalities. This has truly helped me in my music career and spiritual work, because you encounter so many people.”

On managing family time

“I am a big planner. So, I usually plan my family time. As for my personal time, I go to the gym every day and on the weekends, I make sure to indulge in a movie. It’s important not to focus on work 24/7. You need to be able to have time to relax.”

On something she wished she had learned earlier

“How much you need to prioritize your goals. Also, that you need to really believe in yourself and your product to achieve those goals. It is great to have several careers, but you need to make sure this is what you want out of life.”

On overcoming the stigma of having many careers

“I think that people assume that you are not focused. You don’t know what you want or that you are undertaking too much. I don’t care what people think. I think that is where people get into trouble, when they are too focused on what people think about them. You need to just stay focused and get the job done.”

On how to sublimate your ego at the day job

“My day job works to better the lives of others. They rehab affordable housing apartment buildings and build community centers within them. They work to help the community. I love what they do, and it goes along with what I hope my music and spiritual career can accomplish.”
