Fandango at the Wall – Brooklyn Bridge Park

by | Jul 14, 2022

What a night!

I’m still trying to soak it all in.

Last Saturday, St. Ann’s Warehouse presented Fandango at the Wall in Brooklyn Bridge Park – Pier 1.

For those of us involved, it was a reunion concert.

The last time I saw many of my Fandango friends was in 2019 at the Symphony Space concert.

And then the pandemic…

I hadn’t been to NYC in a while, either.

I grabbed my leona which my friend had kept for me for a few years.

And sat in with the band.

Patricio Hidalgo noticed my Spanish had improved. When we first met I could hardly speak a lick. Three years later – I haven’t missed a day of Spanish lessons on DuoLingo.

The concert was remarkable.

Arturo O’Farrill, the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Regina Carter, Akua Dixon, Villalobos Brothers, the Conga Patria Collective (love their new name!)

Kudos and thanks to St. Ann’s Warehouse, Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, and everyone involved in making the show happen.

An audience of ~2,000 (they tell me) gazed at the bandstand.

Under a cotton candy sunset.

With boats sailing nearby on the East River.

The Statue of Liberty gleaming in the distance.

I thought it was the best musical performance so far of the project.

Music as communion.

Music as friendship.
